Abstract
Anaerobic digestion of green waste and cow dung has the potential for energy recovery;however, its conversion into methane via mono-digestion is limited either by the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass or by the prior degradation of the organic matter. Thus, various strategies aim to improve methane yields, such as co-digestion, which provides nutritional and microbiological input, and the proper selection of inocula, which ensures the presence of the microbial community responsible for degradation and the consequent production of methane.
In this context, this study evaluated the influence of the inoculum source on the anaerobic mono-digestion of green waste and the effect of co-digestion with bovine manure on methane production, kinetic behavior, process stability, biodegradability, and synergy between substrates. In mono-digestion, three inocula were evaluated: cow dung, anaerobic sludge, and a mixture of both. Cow dung showed the highest methane yield (292.8 ± 6.5 NmL CH4/gVS),followed by the mixture of cow dung and anaerobic sludge (263.2 ± 4.8 NmL CH4/gVS) and anaerobic sludge (221.0 ± 30.5 NmL CH4/gVS), with statistically significant differences between the conditions. The modified Gompertz and Logistic models showed fits greater than 0,99 to the experimental data. The system inoculated exclusively with cow dung showed the highest maximum methane production rate, reaching 30,19 NmL CH4/(gVSadd·d) for the modified Gompertz model, in addition to the lowest T90 (12–13 days), indicating a higher rate of organic matter conversion. In co-digestion, the ratios between cow dung and green waste of 1:1, 2:1 and 1:2 were evaluated. The results obtained at the evaluated ratios in co-digestion did not differ statistically from each other in terms of yield, indicating that the benefits obtained with this strategy are independent of the concentrations evaluated. All conditions showed positive synergistic effects, with synergy factors between 1,08 and 1,13, and biodegradability between 91% and 97%, while mono-digestion of green waste showed 82%. Co-digestion also reduced the second lag phase from approximately 20 days in mono-digestion to 9.8–16.7 days,in addition to increasing the maximum rate of the second methane production phase to 5.4–7.3 NmL CH4/(gVSadd·d). The physicochemical parameters indicated process stability under all codigestion conditions, with pH between 7.4 and 7.9, low AV/AT ratios, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations compatible with methanogenic activity. The results demonstrate that both the appropriate selection of inoculum and co-digestion with cow dung are strategies capable of improving the energy recovery from green waste, favoring methane yield, the organic matter conversion rate, and the biodegradability of the substrates. From this perspective, future studies should seek alternative sources of inoculum and understand the dynamics of the complementary characteristics of the residues.
