El \u00e1rea ha destacado por su constante actualizaci\u00f3n y mantenimiento de altos niveles compatibles con los est\u00e1ndares internacionales y ha ejercido una importante influencia en el desarrollo de la ciencia y la tecnolog\u00eda en las \u00faltimas cuatro d\u00e9cadas, permitiendo transformar las teor\u00edas cl\u00e1sicas de la mec\u00e1nica del continuo en herramientas pr\u00e1cticas para predecir y comprender el comportamiento de sistemas complejos. Las herramientas de la mec\u00e1nica computacional se utilizan ampliamente en la simulaci\u00f3n de proyectos y avances tecnol\u00f3gicos actuales; incluyendo la industria, la medicina, la defensa y muchas otras \u00e1reas del conocimiento, sin apartarse de sus or\u00edgenes, actuando siempre para superar retos y dificultades en los proyectos de ingenier\u00eda.  <\/p><p>Entre las diversas l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n pertenecientes a esta \u00e1rea, cabe destacar tanto el desarrollo como la aplicaci\u00f3n avanzada de m\u00e9todos num\u00e9ricos, tales como m\u00e9todos de elementos finitos, m\u00e9todos de elementos de contorno, m\u00e9todos de diferencias finitas, m\u00e9todos de vol\u00famenes finitos y m\u00e9todos sin malla, entre otros, que se han desarrollado con la ayuda del parque inform\u00e1tico y los clusters de PC existentes en el PEC.
