In tune with social demands, the Laboratory works with undergraduate students (Tutorial Education Program &#8211; PET\/MEC-SESu &#8211; CAPES support and PIBIC Program &#8211; CNPq support) and postgraduate students (master&#8217;s and doctorate), placing great emphasis on the emerging issue of integrated watershed management. <\/p><p>The formation of the new Laboratory brings together and integrates the Laboratories that have historically developed alongside the Civil Engineering Program at COPPE\/UFRJ, namely: Tracers Laboratory (1972); Hydrology Laboratory (1987) and Computational Hydraulics Laboratory (1998).<\/p><p>The main mission of the Water Resources and Environment Laboratory is to build a database and develop analysis tools that can be integrated into a decision support system for water resources management, supported by environmental modeling and hydro-meteorological and global climate change monitoring at the basin scale.<\/p><p> <\/p><h5 data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1331\"><strong data-start=\"1304\" data-end=\"1331\">Strategic Guidelines<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1426\">The laboratory&#8217;s strategy is guided by academic-scientific axes that are worth highlighting:<\/p><ol data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1916\"><li data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1471\"><p data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1471\">Surface and underground hydrology<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1563\"><p data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1563\">Surface-atmosphere interactions, micrometeorology and mesoscale hydrometeorology<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1605\"><p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1605\">Water, air and soil quality<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1606\" data-end=\"1631\"><p data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1631\">River hydraulics<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1663\"><p data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1663\">Sediment transport<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1664\" data-end=\"1693\"><p data-start=\"1667\" data-end=\"1693\">Hydraulic structures<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1712\"><p data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1712\">Hydrometry<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1757\"><p data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1757\">Application of tracers in hydrology<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"1855\"><p data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1855\">Environmental modeling and water resource management in rural and urban watersheds<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1916\"><p data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"1916\">Global climate change and its regional effects<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"Estilo2\">These themes encourage the development of remote sensing and geophysical techniques, with the aim of making up for the lack of data and helping to solve problems related to Brazilian river basins. One example of this is the quest to improve the quality, reduce the costs and optimize the acquisition time of basic hydrological data. This is essential for forecasting, control and action strategies during droughts and floods, as well as enabling estimates of the impacts of climate change on the hydrological cycle, river regimes and the identification of hydrological risks and measures to adapt to new environmental conditions.  <\/p><p> <\/p><h5 data-start=\"2585\" data-end=\"2614\"><strong data-start=\"2589\" data-end=\"2614\">Scientific questions<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"2616\" data-end=\"2688\">The laboratory seeks to answer fundamental scientific questions such as:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"3189\"><li data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2804\"><p data-start=\"2692\" data-end=\"2804\">What factors affect the interannual variability of surface and underground runoff in river basins?<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2939\"><p data-start=\"2807\" data-end=\"2939\">How do temporal and spatial patterns of soil moisture influence energy and water balances and runoff variability?<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2940\" data-end=\"3058\"><p data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"3058\">How to determine the uncertainties in hydrological model flows based on spatio-temporal rainfall fields?<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3189\"><p data-start=\"3061\" data-end=\"3189\">How to model and integrate water quantity and quality patterns in river basins and estuarine and coastal environments?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><h5 data-start=\"3191\" data-end=\"3218\"><strong data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3218\">Study Programs<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"3220\" data-end=\"3306\">To address these issues, LABH2O is developing three main study programs:<\/p><ol data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"4779\"><li data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3876\"><p data-start=\"3311\" data-end=\"3415\"><strong data-start=\"3311\" data-end=\"3415\">Program 1 &#8211; Environmental modeling and integrated management of water resources in rural and urban basins<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3420\" data-end=\"3876\">This program focuses on the importance of computer modeling in quantifying key variables for the decision-making process. The integration of model results with management systems, considering the integrated analysis of environmental and social risks and impacts, is central. Themes include climate change, aquifer vulnerability, contamination of water resources and the use of fluorescent tracers to study the dispersion of pollutants.  <\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3878\" data-end=\"4377\"><p data-start=\"3881\" data-end=\"3989\"><strong data-start=\"3881\" data-end=\"3989\">Program 2 &#8211; Spatial hydrology and remote sensing as a source of data for computer modeling<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3994\" data-end=\"4377\">This program explores the use of automatic and remote sensing platforms as direct sources of hydrological data or as inputs to hydrological, hydrodynamic and water quality models. The focus is on the development of integrated information technologies, including digital cartography, to support the management and modeling of water resources and the environment. <\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4379\" data-end=\"4779\"><p data-start=\"4382\" data-end=\"4466\"><strong data-start=\"4382\" data-end=\"4466\">Program 3 &#8211; Hydrological-hydraulic-atmospheric and water quality modeling<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4471\" data-end=\"4779\">Numerical modeling is the basis of this program, with the intention of integrating hydrological, hydraulic, atmospheric and geomorphological processes on different space-time scales. The creation of integrated, environmentally and socially sustainable models is one of the main objectives of this line of research. <\/p><\/li><\/ol><p> <\/p><h5 data-start=\"4781\" data-end=\"4797\"><strong data-start=\"4785\" data-end=\"4797\">Projects<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"4799\" data-end=\"4930\">The laboratory carries out projects in various watersheds, both rural and urban, at different scales, including:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"5084\"><li data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"4961\"><p data-start=\"4934\" data-end=\"4961\">Para\u00edba do Sul River Basin<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4962\" data-end=\"5015\"><p data-start=\"4964\" data-end=\"5015\">Rural and urban basins in the state of Rio de Janeiro<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5016\" data-end=\"5033\"><p data-start=\"5018\" data-end=\"5033\">Amazon Basin<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5034\" data-end=\"5055\"><p data-start=\"5036\" data-end=\"5055\">Cuiab\u00e1 River Basin<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5056\" data-end=\"5084\"><p data-start=\"5058\" data-end=\"5084\">S\u00e3o Francisco River Basin<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"5086\" data-end=\"5643\">These projects aim to build and disseminate knowledge about the proper management of river basins, with partnerships between academic, scientific and operational institutions and society. One of the main projects is the study of the experimental basin of the Piabanha River, located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro (EIBEX), a tributary of the Para\u00edba do Sul River. This basin, with its Atlantic Forest biomes, agricultural and urban areas, serves as a full-scale laboratory for the development of new scientific methodologies and technological innovations. As well as carrying out research and studies related to surface water hydrology, it is also one of the pioneering laboratories at COPPE\/UFRJ in the experimental approach to problems related to the environment. <\/p><p>In collaboration with the University of Texas (Austin), LT has developed methodologies for the use of fluorescent tracers associated with inactive gaseous tracers in order to carry out studies on the reaeration process of surface waters.<\/p><p>With the support of the Institut f\u00fcr Hydrologie-GSF (Munich), LT uses techniques involving the use of fluorescent tracers in studies aimed at assessing the dispersion of household and industrial effluents discharged through outfalls into receiving bodies (rivers, lakes and coastal waters).<\/p><p>In the field of applications related to submarine outfalls, LT has maintained an intense collaboration with the Coastal Engineering Area for the &#8220;in situ&#8221; measurement of fluorescent tracer dispersion plumes continuously injected into outfalls.<\/p><p>The dispersion plumes measured in the field are used to calibrate simulations carried out using computer models, especially the SisBAHIA\u00ae model (http:\/\/www.sisbahia.coppe.ufrj.br\/). Through exchanges with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), joint publications have been made in this area.<\/p><p>LT often interacts with other research lines in the Civil Engineering Program and the Ocean Engineering Program in water quality modeling and cooperates with the Pollution Control Laboratory of the Chemical Engineering Program at COPPE\/UFRJ in activities related to the use of inactive tracers in biological reactors.<\/p><p>LT&#8217;s current activities focus on research into the applications of fluorescent tracers in surface hydrology and in studies of problems related to water pollution. Typical applications are: <\/p><ul><li>&#8211; Determining the dispersion coefficient of pollutants in rivers and lakes<\/li><li>&#8211; Evaluation of the efficiency of submarine outfalls in rivers and coastal waters<\/li><li>&#8211; Characterization of natural reaeration capacity in rivers and canals<\/li><li>&#8211; Measuring hydrodynamic parameters in sewage treatment plants<\/li><li>&#8211; Measuring turbine flows in medium and large hydroelectric plants<\/li><li>&#8211; Monitoring of meteo-oceanographic parameters (generally in support of activities involving the use of fluorescent tracers)<\/li><\/ul><p>A special effort is dedicated to optimizing techniques for determining the fluorescence of aqueous samples in the laboratory using the &#8220;Synchronous Scanning Method&#8221;.<\/p><p>Over the last few years, LT has also been involved in the development, design and construction of various pieces of field equipment that have no commercial counterparts, but which are essential for optimizing the use of fluorescent tracers.<\/p><p>The Tracer Laboratory is also one of the newest members of the Thematic Network on Conservation and Recovery of Ecosystems and Remediation of Impacted
